During the first five years of the new Millennium, the battle for supremacy in North London was a non-contest as Arsenal frequently secured qualification for the Champions League and Tottenham Hotspur remained scrapping for a respectable position in mid-table. However, during the 2005-06 campaign, Spurs mounted a revival under the guidance of Martin Jol and ahead of the final day of the season, they held a narrow advantage over their rivals in the race for fourth place.
