Martin Sinclair on playing for England, trying to save his friend from drowning and his brother Scott

Martin Sinclair dragged himself from his wheelchair and inched to the edge of the quarry near Shepton Mallet. Sinclair didn’t look down at the dark water 30 feet below. He didn’t think about the cerebral palsy limiting movement down the left side of his body. He thought only of his friend who had disappeared into the water. He stepped over the edge. Sinclair has always been brave. Ignoring his limp, Sinclair would throw himself into full-on kickabouts in his back garden near Bath against his brothers: Scott, who hopes to feature in the FA Cup final with Aston Villa on Saturday, and Jake, an attacker just released by Southampton.
