Arteta ready to fight for his place

Mikel Arteta says he delayed the signing of his new deal until he was sure he'd recovered from his ankle surgery and could maintain the level required. The 33 year old missed the last 6 months of the season after struggling through the opening months with a debilitating calf problem which was linked to an ankle problem corrected with an operation in November. And despite the fact the new contract was on the table, the Spaniard wanted to make sure he could play his part before putting pen to paper.
