Arsenal given green light for ‘new Xabi Alonso’ swoop

Real Madrid’s Asier Illarramendi has rejected a move to Athletic Bilbao as he holds out for a summer switch to Arsenal, according to reports from The Express. The 24-year-old playmaker – who has been compared to former Liverpool hero Xabi Alonso in the past – has only been at the Bernabeu for 18 months, yet his first-team role under Carlo Ancelotti has been relatively limited.
