Arsenal appoint Per Mertesacker as club captain: Arsene Wenger reveals why

The Germany international, who signed from Werder Bremen in August 2011, will take the armband from Mikel Arteta.  Arteta brought his five-year spell in north London to an end earlier this summer to work as a coach under Pep Guardiola at rivals Manchester City.  Mertesacker has been given the role over the likes of Laurent Koscielny and Petr Cech, despite the fact he will miss the next five months through injury.  Despite that, Arsene Wenger believes that Mertesacker was the natural choice for the honour.  “Per is a very respected figure in the dressing room, is loved as well and is also a very demanding figure.
