Interview

‘We were a bit sloppy but in control throughout’

Montemurro

We reached the final of the Continental League Cup on Thursday night as we beat Manchester United 2-1 at Meadow Park.

Mollie Green’s late strike created a nervy atmosphere in the closing stages at Meadow Park, but in the end, Vivianne Miedema’s double was enough to book our place in the final against Manchester City

We spoke to Montemurro after the final whistle - and this is what he said:

on the overall performance…

They made it difficult for us. It wasn’t the cleanest of games and it wasn’t one of the better games we’ve played either. We were a bit sloppy in areas and allowed them in, but in the end, we came through in those moments. The most important thing is to get over the line.

on waiting for United to tire…

Apart from the goal, I think we were pretty much in control throughout. They didn’t really expose us much or get beyond us either, but once they got the goal, there were moments where they were able to get on top because we’ve dropped off to protect our lead. In the end, they’re always going to be difficult games, though. They’re finals, they’re one-off games, so you’ve just got to give it everything you can. I give credit to Manchester United.

on Louise Quinn making her 50th appearance for the club…

Louise is reliable. She’s always there and she’s an absolute pleasure to work with. She’s always willing to learn and willing to push forward, so she’s fantastic for the group. We all love her here.

on having 10 days to prepare for Chelsea…

We’ve got the current state of the squad a little more under control now in terms of players coming back, so we can at least start planning and looking at when we can integrate players back in. That’s a good position to be in and exactly what you want for the run in.

on facing Manchester City in the final…

Regardless of who it is, we’ll take it and give it our best shot.
