Pre-Match Report

Match preview: Arsenal U-21s v Peterborough United

Arsenal Academy

Steve Bould’s side will be looking for their first victory in the Leasing .com Trophy this season when we travel to Peterborough United on Tuesday.

THE SEASON SO FAR

We impressed in our opening fixture in the competition but were unlucky to concede a late equaliser to Northampton Town and then lose on penalties.

James Olayinka gave us the lead after tapping in Emile Smith-Rowe’s inviting cross but Sam Hoskins struck a late volley to force the game to penalties.

Despite Matt Macey’s terrific save in the shoot-out, Northampton came out on top as we took a point from the game.

OUR OPPONENTS

Peterborough won their opening game in this competition back at the start of September, as they beat Northampton Town on the road.

Idris Kanu opened the scoring for the visitors midway through the first half, before Siriki Dembele extended their advantage just three minutes later.

The Posh have made a decent start to the League One season too, sitting eighth in the table and only two points outside the play-off places. Ivan Toney and Mohamed Eisa have both hit eight goals so far and Marcus Maddison has registered six assists.

Darren Ferguson is currently in his third spell as Posh boss after initially taking over caretaker charge last season before being appointed full-time. During his second spell he achieved promotion to the Championship through the play-offs.

ONE TO WATCH

Folarin Balogun has stepped up from the under-18s this season and made a seamless transition, scoring seven goals in as many games in the Premier League 2.

He opened his account by scoring a hat-trick in our opening fixture against Blackburn Rovers and has either scored or assisted in his past four matches. The 18-year-old has predominantly featured as a lone striker this season and has proved as a good asset to Steve Bould due to his electric pace and clinical finishing.

The England U-19 international is yet to score against senior opposition in a competitive match but hit a six minute hat-trick against Barnet in pre-season.
