Malin Gut joins Arsenal Women

Swiss midfielder Malin Gut has joined Arsenal Women from Swiss club Grasshopper Zurich. The 20-year old provides back up to Gunners midfielder Lia Wälti for the Swiss national team.

Gut will provide valuable competition in the defensive midfield role. Arsenal did not really have a back up defensive midfielder last season, instead repurposing centre-half Leah Williamson or attacking midfielder Jill Roord into the role when Wälti was unavailable.

Gut is very highly rated and has 5 caps for Switzerland, she is primarily a ball playing defensive midfielder in the mould of Wälti but she can also play at centre-half.

It’s a very big honour for me to be able to play and represent this club in the future,” Gut told Arsenal.com. “From the beginning it felt like everything fitted perfectly. I talked to Joe a lot which helped because he was really able to convince me from the first second and I felt that he’s the kind of coach I really want to play with. I’m very, very excited to play with the Arsenal shirt for the first time.”

“She’s a player that I noticed about a year ago now in the Swiss national team that is very, very mature for her age,” said Joe Montemurro.

“She’s someone that I think is really going to flourish in our environment around the players that she’s going to be around. She’s a very exciting prospect for the club.”

Says a lot when all you can do is play around with her name. I’m hoping she’s one for the future considering the talent we have. We should have more promising youngsters but just lately we seem to be losing them.

Competition and cover for the defensive midfield role is great news. She seems like a versatile player and it is great that we are scouting out highly talented youngsters (who are nonetheless full fledged international players).

Slightly baffled, one “imported” youngster in, 2 “home grown” younsters (probably more!) out?

Yes, I understand what you are saying but I don’t think Joe has deliberately set out to sign youngsters per se but Malin has been on his radar for some time. The other consideration is that Mel, Ruby, et al were academy players fringing on the first team due to the injury toll depleting the first team squad. Malin, on the other hand, despite her mere 19 years, is a capped senior international and if the Swiss trust her to play alongside Lia who are we to argue? The real issue here, as we have discussed before, is that if… Read more »

BTW, I know Tim states Malin is 20 but her birthday is 1st August so at the moment she is 19!
