Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi reportedly tells the club that he wants to leave next year, having rejected the offer of a new contract during the summer.

Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi has reportedly told the club that he wants to leave after rejecting a new contract during the summer.

The 28-year-old's current deal expires next year, meaning that he will be free to discuss a switch to foreign clubs from January.

football.london reports that Mustafi was offered a contract extension during the recent transfer window, but turned it down and informed the Gunners that he is keen to leave when his current deal runs out.

The centre-back is thought to favour a move to Serie A in order to be closer to his wife's Albanian-Swiss family, who live in Switzerland.

Mustafi has made just one appearance for Arsenal so far this season, returning from a knee injury as a second-half sub in Sunday's 1-0 home defeat to Leicester City.

The Germany international had previously worked his way back into the first team under Mikel Arteta, starting 15 of 17 games last season before picking up a knee injury.

Mustafi joined Arsenal for around £35m in 2016 and has gone on to make 143 appearances for the club.
