Olympic Games: Miedema scores four in opener

The women's football tournament at the 2020 Olympic Games kicked off on Wednesday - and a number of Gunners were in action.

Kim Little starred in the opening game as Team GB got off to a winning start with a 2-0 victory over Chile. Our No 10 - named as one of three captains for this summer's competition - was at her influential best, dictating play from her attacking-midfield position and following her incisive pass, was unlucky to see Ellen White's 10th-minute strike ruled out for offside. 

But just seven minutes later, our former striker did find the net, pouncing on a loose ball inside the six-yard box. Nikita Parris was a second-half substitute and made an instant impact, combining with Lucy Bronze inside the box to pick up White for an acrobatic second. Leah Williamson didn't feature.

Team GB's next Group A game is on Saturday, against Japan at 11.30am (UK) - and it'll be a tough test against the hosts, who go into the match full of confidence following a dramatic draw with Canada thanks to Mana Iwabuchi's strike. 

Christine Sinclair had hit her 187th goal on her 300th cap for Canada - just the fourth footballer history to reach the appearance milestone - to put her country ahead inside six minutes. Japan were then handed an opportunity to equalise after half-time, but Mina Tanaka's penalty was saved by Steph Labbe.

But Japan's pressure would eventually tell. Iwabuchi raced in behind Canada's back line before firing a first-time strike into the bottom corner to seal a vital point for the tournament hosts. 

Meanwhile in Group B, Vivianne Miedema stole the show. Our striker scored four goals in Netherlands' 10-3 rout of Zambia, including two inside the opening 15 minutes.

First Miedema capitalised on a defensive error to round Hazel Nali and finish into the empty net, before Gunners legend Danielle van de Donk set her through on goal to dink over the onrushing goalkeeper. 

Miedema completed her hat-trick on the half-hour mark, again finding the net from a Van de Donk pass, before the duo combined once again after half-time to take Miedema's personal tally to four. Lieke Martens, Shanice van de Sanden, Jill Roord, Lineth Beerensteyn and Victoria Pelova completed the scoring, with Netherlands building plenty of momentum ahead of their next game, against Brazil at midday on Saturday.

And in opening day's final game, Lydia Williams, Steph Catley and Caitlin Foord all started as Australia beat rivals New Zealand 2-1 in Group C. The Matildas got off to a perfect start when Tameka Yallop finished Sam Kerr's pass inside 20 minutes.

Things got better on the half-hour mark, when Catley crossed for Kerr to head home inside the box to seal the three points for Australia. The Matildas' next game is on Saturday when they face off against Sweden, who hit three goals past the United States in their opening game. The match kicks off at 9.30am (UK).
