Ajax director of football Marc Overmars admits that Arsenal-linked goalkeeper Andre Onana could leave the club on a free transfer next year.

Arsenal-linked goalkeeper Andre Onana could leave Ajax on a free transfer in the summer of 2022, director of football Marc Overmars has admitted.

The Cameroon international was tipped to complete a move to the Gunners in the most recent transfer window before Mikel Arteta's side opted to move for Aaron Ramsdale instead.

However, with current number one Bernd Leno supposedly set to leave on a free transfer next year, Arsenal could once again be in the market for a new name in between the sticks in 2022.

When asked about the possibility of extending Onana's deal, Overmars has now handed his former side a major boost should they reignite their interest in the 25-year-old, telling Ajax TV: "You never know in football, but the way I see it now, I don't see that happening anytime soon.

"It is possible that he will leave in the winter, but that must yield a decent amount. It must go both ways. If the amount is not sufficient, then [he will leave] in July for nothing."

Onana was also tipped to complete a move to Lyon in the summer before a transfer fell through, and the former Barcelona starlet is still serving a doping ban for another two months.
