Man Utd team news: Expected XI vs Arsenal as Carrick makes big Cristiano Ronaldo call

MICHAEL CARRICK will continue to be in charge of Manchester United after Ralf Rangnick's work permit failed to be automatically cleared.

Ralf Rangnick confirmed as Manchester United interim manager

Michael Carrick will step into the Old Trafford dugout as manager for the third time on Thursday as Manchester United take on Arsenal. The Englishman made a huge call in dropping Cristiano Ronaldo last time out and could do the same again against the Gunners. Express Sport takes a look at United's potential XI.

Goalkeeper: De Gea

David De Gea has thus far been the reason United aren't much further down the league table.

The Spaniard has been a mainstay in United's side ever since his arrival in 2011.

His shot-stopping is one of the best in the world, and his level of consistency is arguably better than anyone.

And with the ex-Atletico Madrid goalkeeper ahead of Dean Henderson in the pecking order, there appears to be only one call to make in the goalkeeping department.

Defence: Wan-Bissaka, Maguire, Bailly, Shaw

United's downfall this season has been their defence.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire have yet to prove they are worth the combined £130million paid for them with horrific performances so far.

Four goals shipped to Watford was enough, and despite only conceding from the penalty spot in Carrick's tenure, there is hope that Arsenal don't capitalise on their frailties.

Elsewhere, Eric Bailly and Luke Shaw complete the back four.

Midfield: Fred, McTominay, Fernandes

Carrick has a big call to make over whether or not Donny van de Beek will start this encounter.

The Dutchman was given the nod against Villarreal, but was then dropped to the bench for the draw with Chelsea.

It seems likely that he will once again be a substitute against the Gunners.

Attack: Sancho. Ronaldo, Greenwood

Sancho's two recent goals will give him much more confidence to succeed at Old Trafford.

Alongside him, Cristiano Ronaldo may be preferred at home due to his inability to press alongside his natural finishing ability.

Mason Greenwood could be installed as United aim to stay on the front foot.

And that would mean Marcus Rashford being dropped ahead of the youngster.
