Jamie Carragher has questioned whether Ralf Rangnick had a say in Manchester United's defensive style against Arsenal. Michael Carrick guided United to a 3-2 win on Thursday as Rangnick watched on at Old Trafford, and Carragher thinks the new interim manager will have liked what he saw.

Adidas and Manchester United have launched their official 2021/22 home jersey, putting a modern twist on their classic club styles.

At the start of the week, United announced Rangnick as their new interim manager until the end of the season.

But work permit delays saw him receive his visa on the day of the game, meaning he could only watch Arsenal's visit from the stands.

While it wasn't a perfect performance by any stretch, Cristiano Ronaldo's second-half double fired United to their first home Premier League win since September.

And some viewers picked up on a positive change in the way United were defending high up the pitch, which has ties to Rangnick's high-pressing style.

During the second half, Carragher took to Twitter to praise United for their tenacity when defending from the front against Arsenal.

The Liverpool icon suggested Rangnick would have been impressed by what he witnessed from the stands in the hosts' triumph.

He wrote: "Not sure how much involvement Ragnick has had tonight, if any, but Man Utd have won the ball off Arsenal a lot in the attacking third. Ralf will be impressed!"

Despite the observation, it's believed that Rangnick was solely a spectator, and Michael Carrick and his coaching team implemented all tactics.

Friday marks Rangnick's official first day in charge of the Red Devils, and he started the day off by meeting the media for an inaugural press conference.

The 63-year-old spoke well and outlined his desire to make his side more balanced to prevent continued high-scoring games with many goals conceded.

"The major target for me is just to bring more balance to the team. We conceded two goals yesterday and if you look at the total of number of goals conceded, it is on average of two a game," Rangnick explained.

"That is just too much. Those are not the kind of games you need every day. In football to me, it's to minimise the coincidence factor."

The German tactician will meet the United squad at Carrington later on Friday, with his focus likely to be on Crystal Palace's visit on Sunday.

He'll take his first full training session on Saturday and stand in the home dugout the following day as United take on the Eagles.

It's a difficult time to join a club and implement your style with so many fixtures on the horizon, but Rangnick will gradually ensure effective pressing from the front is standard practice.
