Tottenham are trying hard to make new additions to support Antonio Conte in the January transfer window, as supporters raise concerns over the lack of new signings and the potential sale of prospect Dilan Markanday, writes Lyall Thomas.

Conte has cut a frustrated figure in recent news conferences but more over repeated questions about the scale of the task facing him at Spurs than about actual inaction by the club in the market.

Adama Traore of Wolves is high on their list of targets and they see him as someone who can play at right wing-back or among the front players, with his ability to run at and beat defenders.

His arrival may mean less opportunities for Steven Bergwijn, who is the subject of talks over a permanent switch back to the Netherlands with Ajax. A bid of around £15m has already been rejected during negotiations.

However, Conte said ahead of the north London derby, live on Sky Sports Premier League on Sunday: "For sure he is not 100 per cent fit in this moment, but I needed him to come on the bench, to stay with us.

"Steven is a player that has recovered from his injury. He had two training sessions with us. I asked him his availability for the game against Arsenal, because for me he's an important option after Son was injured.

"In this moment we have only two strikers, Harry and Lucas, and then there is Bergwijn, and then also there is Scarlett, but he is also recovering from an injury."

It suggests Conte would rather not lose Bergwijn unless he has replacements through the door. He has given an honest appraisal to Spurs' managing director of football Fabio Paratici, with whom he has a strong relationship, and chairman Daniel Levy - and they are keen to bring in another striker to support Harry Kane before the deadline.

The future of Tanguy Ndombele, who was also not in the squad after a poor showing against Morecambe in the FA Cup, has continued to be the subject of much speculation but Conte said on Friday: "In this moment, Tanguy is a Tottenham player. For this reason you have to consider him a Tottenham player."

Centre-back Joe Rodon could leave on loan but Spurs are short of options at centre-back with Eric Dier having picked up a knock and Cristian Romero only in the final stages of recovery from a long-term injury. Jack Clarke also needs to get out on loan for first-team games.

Dybala set for more Juve contract talks

One player Tottenham have tried for in the past is Paulo Dybala, who is set for more contract talks with Juventus after the January transfer window, according to Sky in Italy, with his current deal expiring in the summer.

It remains to be seen whether the Argentinian will accept the conditions proposed by Juventus months ago and whether it will be signed.

On the eve of the match against Udinese, manager Massimiliano Allegri said: "The evaluations of the contracts are of the company, they are not things that concern me.

"I raised Paulo. He was a child when he arrived from Palermo. The value of the player is not in dispute. All evaluations will be made in March-April."

Dybala has been in new contract talks for some considerable time following interest from other clubs in previous transfer windows, including Manchester United and Tottenham in 2019.

The following year he admitted he was close to leaving Turin. He has entered the final six months of his current deal.

Allegri suggests he wants Arthur to stay

Juventus boss Max Allegri has suggested he wants Arthur to stay amid interest from Arsenal.

"On Arthur, I can say that this is the Juventus squad and with these players we must reach the end of the season in the best possible way. We are growing," he said ahead of the weekend's game with Udinese.

Sky in Italy are reporting that Arsenal remain keen on the Brazil midfielder but there are currently no negotiations towards a conclusion.

Juve like Loftus-Cheek the most

In any case, Juventus have begun to reflect on possible replacements in the event of his departure, and the name they like best is Chelsea's Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

On Loftus-Cheek moving on, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel said on Friday: "We haven't talked about it, he's had a lot of game time, I would say.

'If you look at the last years and look at this season, I think he's had a lot of game time and lot to fight for here. We talk about Ruben [and that's] my personal opinion."
