Gabriel Martinelli joins an elite crowd of Arsenal players after being handed the number 11 shirt for the 2022-23 season.

Arsenal attacker Gabriel Martinelli has been handed the club's illustrious number 11 shirt for the 2022-23 season.

The Gunners announced the launch of their new kit earlier on Thursday and will be donning the colours during their final game of the Premier League season against Everton on Sunday at the Emirates.

The Arsenal Foundation will receive £5 from every home shirt sale, and the club also revealed that Martinelli was now in possession of the famed number 11 jersey.

Martinelli has donned the number 35 for Arsenal since arriving in 2019 and has become a regular starter for Mikel Arteta this term with five goals and five assists in 28 Premier League matches.

Martin Odegaard wore the number 11 for the Gunners last season, while Lucas Torreira was in possession of the jersey for a couple of years and offered his congratulations to Martinelli on Instagram, while also joking "What number will I wear next year? 😂😂 😂".

Torreira's comments may have appeared to hint at a return for the Uruguayan next season, but Fiorentina are set to sign the midfielder on a permanent basis from the Gunners in the summer.

Robin van Persie, Mesut Ozil, Marc Overmars, Charlie George, Liam Brady, Ray Parlour, George Graham and Ian Wright are among the previous Arsenal players to have sported the "11" down the years.

Arsenal head into Sunday's game with Everton needing to win and hope that Tottenham Hotspur slip up against Norwich City to seal a place in the top four.
