Arsene Wenger was weighing up a move for Sterling last summer as a replacement for Alexis Sanchez. The French tactician then lined up Monaco’s Thomas Lemar for Sanchez on deadline day, but was worried about how little time he would have to strike a deal and pulled out. Sterling has been instrumental in City’s sensational season to date which sees them unbeaten in 15 Premier League games and eight points ahead of Manchester United going into their showdown at Old Trafford later today (4.30pm).
