AFCON 2019: Iwobi suffers semi-final heartbreak

The semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations took place on Sunday. Read on to find out who was involved: Despite a spirited performance, Alex Iwobi was unable to prevent Nigeria from slipping to a 2-1 defeat against Algeria on Sunday night. An own goal from William Troost-Ekong handed Algeria a first-half lead, but the Super Eagles bounced back with Odion Ighalo converting from the spot in the 72nd minute. The game looked set for extra time. However, it just wasn’t to be for Gernot Rohr’s side, as Riyad Mahrez found the top corner with a stunning free-kick deep into injury time, sending Nigeria out of the tournament. Copyright 2019 The
