Liverpool’s defensive woes first started last summer, when Jurgen Klopp allowed Dejan Lovren to leave the club. The decision to not replace the Croatian was criticised by Jamie Carragher – and that was before a raft of injuries decimated their remaining options at the back. Virgil van Dijk would go on to suffer an ACL injury, while his first choice partner Joe Gomez also suffered a knee injury that will see him miss a significant portion of the season.
